LocalEats to Donate 100% of Mobile Revenues to the Red Cross Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund

Posted on January 20, 2010 by brelleva

Nashville, TN  – LocalEats, a leading iPhone and BlackBerry Storm dining application and creator of popular website WhereTheLocalsEat.com, announced yesterday that it has released its LocalEats app for the Android platform and that it is donating 100% of all its mobile app revenue, until March 1, to the American Red Cross* Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund.

“Some other iPhone app developers have decided to donate to the effort in Haiti, as well,” says company founder Bill King, “and we’re just proud to be part of a mobile software and technology community that can do something like this. The information and the links that have been all over social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook encouraging people to support the relief efforts and the text messaging services that automatically send donations to wonderful agencies have put a real spotlight on the ability of these new technologies to promote help, relief and awareness during times of crisis. And we are happy to do what we can — across all three of our major mobile platforms — to help out in some way, amounting to what we hope will be a sizable contribution to the Red Cross fund for Haiti relief.”

LocalEats will be donating 100% of app revenues to the Red Cross through the end of January and through February. LocalEats’ developers hope that the app’s presence on multiple mobile platforms – including the now available Android version – will allow them to reach more smartphone users and therefore collect more donations. The already popular LocalEats costs 99 cents to download on the Android and iPhone and $2.99 on the BlackBerry Storm.

Empty Bowls Luncheon, Jacksonville November 17, 2009

Posted on November 11, 2009 by brelleva

The Empty Bowls Luncheon demonstrates community support for those who are coping with hunger in North Florida. Local celebrities (including media personalities) act as servers for the event. In addition to helping fight hunger, the luncheon presents a diverse program for all. Area students and senior citizen groups have created original, handcrafted ceramic bowls for every guest. Luncheon attendees are able to select just the right bowl to take home.

Local potters and ceramic artists have also donated their time and talents to create unique bowls. In addition, the Empty Bowls Luncheon includes celebrity signed bowls. Recognized personalities from the national and international stage have lent their names to the cause.

The annual Empty Bowls Luncheon has come to symbolize the beginning of Thanksgiving and the holiday season. We hope you join us for a memorable afternoon and help us fill the empty bowls in our community. All proceeds will benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank.

Second Harvest North Florida has served those in need since 1979. In Jacksonville, the majority of the people served by the Food Bank are children and senior citizens. The common misconception is that hunger is experienced only by the homeless; however, this population comprises less than 10 percent of the people helped by the Food Bank.

In an effort to meet growing needs in our community, special events like Empty Bowls help to promote hunger awareness, raise much-needed funds, and show support for one of the nation’s most solvable social issues – food insecurity.

Tickets to the event are $25, with various sponsorship levels also available.

The Celebrity Chef Tour brings James Beard Foundation Award winners and other celebrity chefs to private clubs, resorts, and other exclusive venues around the country for spectacular dining events. The tour was created to benefit the James Beard Foundation and to promote the culinary arts across America.

About the James Beard House and the James Beard Foundation:

James Beard is widely recognized as the father of American culinary arts. Throughout his life, he pursued and advocated the highest standards, and served as a mentor to emerging talents. The James Beard House is where Beard lived, taught, and welcomed friends and colleagues who shared his love for food. Shortly after he passed away, a group of friends sparked a drive to save his home and create a living memorial and a center for the culinary community. It has become what Founding President Peter Kump envisioned it could be, “a culinary place to see and taste the work of this country’s most talented chef’s, wine makers, cookbook authors, and teachers.” The James Beard House’s sister non-profit organization, the James Beard Foundation, whose mission is to “celebrate, preserve and nurture America’s culinary heritage and diversity in order to elevate the appreciation of our culinary excellence,” furthers Mr. Kump’s vision by providing scholarships and volunteer opportunities for aspiring culinary professionals, educating today’s youth on the importance of good food and essential nutrition.
