Barcelona in St. Louis, MO

4.0 Stars - Clayton Tapas -

Barcelona is a high energy tapas restaurant that is great for a happy hour or a really fun night out with friends. In our opinion Barcelona is best enjoyed in the summer when the front doors are opened and the croud is buzzing with excitement and pitchers of Sangria are flowing. The flury of activity in their small kitchen just off to the side of the bar puts out some of the best tapas in St. Louis. Their menu offers a great mix of tapas, but if small plates of food isn't your thing don't worry, because they also offer a good variety of larger plates. You have to try the baked goat cheese with fresh baked bread, but don't forget the beef tenderloin with blue cheese and rioja sauce, both are to die for. Gather your girlfriends, work colleagues or college buddies and dial up a pitcher of their sangria, you won't be dissapointed!

Precious

"Precious" is an absolutely awful movie--if you define "awful" in terms of people doing terrible things to other people, or of adults treating children in a disgraceful manner. In terms of writing, casting, directing and acting, it's a brilliant movie,...

Oliver's $6.99 Bacon Wrapped Filet

Typically I keep these specials on the Missouri side, but today's deal is actually located across the river in Cahokia, Illinois at Oliver's on the Runway, a restaurant located in the Downtown St. Louis Airport.

For those who have done everything in St. Louis and are looking for a new excursion, Oliver's is the perfect follow-up to a day at The Air and Space Museum, located just down the road. The restaurant has an airplane theme, a pilot vibe and a clear view of the runway - a good choice for the child fascinated by planes or anybody who likes to watch the runway and dream a little.

Come in on Saturday and Oliver's is also offering an all day filet promotion which features a 7 ounce bacon wrapped filet and potato for only $6.99.

If Belleville is a little too far or planes just aren't your thing, this special will also be migrating across the river shortly. While you may not have been to Oliver's, there's a good chance you've been to or at least heard of the owner's other restaurant - Crusoe's - which has plans to offer a similar promotion in the near future.

P'Sghetti's to Glendale? Pshaw.

Images[2] A Southside institution as rich as mama's "muskacholi" sauce is opening a new location...in Glendale (in the former Caito's space at 10012 Manchester, to be precise). Look for activity at that address after the first of the year and an opening in March.

P'Sghetti's formula is so simple and so basic, I'm surprised no one has ever picked up on the concept and run with it. For the uninitiated: cheap buckets of pasta; addictive, made-in-house, sweet bread; decent--and cheap--salads and sandwiches; and the kicker--feed a family of 4-6 for $23.

Let's review the simplicity...first, homemade meat sauce is ladled into a half-gallon bucket, followed by steaming spaghetti or mostaccioli noodles, a little more sauce on top, followed by the lid. When you get home, pop the lid, invert the bucket, and voila, hot pasta that hasn't absorbed every available ounce of sauce...the integrity of the noodle is still intact. Mmm. Dig in, kids.

The original location at 5540 S. Lindbergh is geared to quick-service and pick-up, and the new location will be larger (90 seats) but similar. So what will become of Caito's bar...a pasta bar, perhaps? Not likely, says P'sghetti's owner Michael Brannan, adding that "to maintain a family-style atmosphere, the plans are to remove it." Agreed. Asking for a Manhattan with your "p'sghetti" just seems all wrong. -- George Mahe
