JJ Twigs in Saint Louis, MO

4.0 Stars - Double Decker Pizza -

After careful consideration we have decided to add to the best pizza recommendation list in the city. JJ Twigs has made the cut! It's all about the Double Decker. It's not thick, hand tossed or thin crust. It's literally two thin crust pizzas stacked on top of each other before baking. When I say two pizzas, I mean it. Each has its own crust, sauce, cheese, and toppings. The edges are braided together and baked. Two slices are more than enough. Also, this is a Mozzarella pizza for all you Provel haters. The owners hale from Chi Town.

The big knock we have on this place is the dining room. It's small. They only have 10 tables or so and they are crammed together. They also allow smoking, so get it to-go if that is going to bother you. But seriously, the Double Decker is wicked good.

The Fantasticks

All the superlatives about "The Fantasticks" have been written, and they're all true. In the 50 years since it opened off Broadway, there has not been a night when a production was not playing somewhere in the world. I can't...

Saturday Beer Fests in March at Brandt's Cafe

I have to admit, just the thought of beer is still a little off-putting after all of my St. Patrick's Day celebrating down in Dogtown, but for those of you who took it easy on Wednesday and are looking to do a little post St. Patty's Day celebrating on a non-work or school day, be sure to check out Brandt's Cafe this Saturday, March 20th and next Saturday, March 27th, for a day of unlimited beer sampling.

From 12 - 5 pm, Brandt's will be featuring more than 50 different craft beers from around the world. For $30 per person (with pre-paid reservation) or $35 per person (at the door), you will receive a 3 oz tasting glass and have 5 full hours to sample and savor all of the premium beers that your beer loving heart could possibly desire.

This is a great event for anyone who loves beer or is looking to expand their horizons beyond the usual Bud and Bud Light that is so prevalent around St. Louis. If you can keep a steady pace for 5 hours, this event will easily be worth its price tag. Just be sure to call ahead and reserve your spot to snag the extra $5 off -- Reservations can be made by calling Beervana at ( 314) 954-2326.

The Absolut Truth: Shiver Finally Opens

Shiver_logo_1260948186 Think it’s cold outside today? Compared to Shiver, St. Louis’ newest vodka bar, it’s downright balmy. Last night, after months of delays, owner Brad Jureka finally opened the doors–and the freezer doors—to his long-awaited 4500 SF bar, restaurant, and mini-freezeatorium: a 12’ X 12’ commercial freezer, tricked out with Absolut’s finest and frilliest, and get this: bench seating for 10 (perhaps the first furniture that Ice Visions has been commissioned to sculpt).

The courageous are outfitted with hats, parkas, gloves and boots prior to entry; inside, twenty dollars in cold, hard, cash buys 2 vodka shots or cocktails, consumed from glasses made of solid ice. (And please...mind those tongues!)

Last night, inaugural guests were raising gloved shots and toasting their more conventional friends through the freezer’s large, fogless windows. Phrase of the night..."dude, that’s crazy.”

The main bar currently has 150 vodkas on hand, but plan accordingly as the “American grazing menu” is still a week or so off.

Shiver is located at 1130 Washington Avenue, next to Copia (which really may be Opening Soon). There's no website as yet, until then call 241-3900 for more information. Hours are 4 PM to 1:30 AM Tues-Sat; a 3 AM license is pending. But I would stop by soon…the coolest spot in town will only get hotter.  – George Mahe
