Wines to pair with the feast and fowl

By Taylor Eason Like so many other proud American foodies, I look forward to the last Thursday of November. It's the day to gorge on unbelievable quantities of carbs and collapse from the sheer weight of ingested food and drink. It's also a day of futility -- 'tis impossible to resist another slice of succulent turkey, pumpkin pie or heaping mound of Dad's spicy BBQ pork. Perhaps pathetic, but everyone else is doing it. Thanksgiving additions

Both Red Rocks locations will be open for Thanksgiving, offering a buffet (by reservation only) 11 a.m.- 7 p.m. for $22.95 for adults and $10.95 for those younger than 12. Among the offerings: herb roasted turkey, dry-rubbed sliced sirloin, lemon-cranberry-glazed Atlantic salmon, pineapple-glazed ham, fried chicken, a "dessert extravaganza" and more. BLT Steak offers a three-course menu noon-9 p.m. for $68 ($34 for younger than 12); choices include butternut squash soup; wild mushroom risotto; organic turkey with chestnut stuffing; prime rib; seared Scottish salmon; chocolate tart and more. 110 N. College St.; 704-972-4380.

George Washington is glad to have more pigs around

(Dean Mullis) We named our Ossabaw boar George Washington, because he came from the Mount Vernon Estate.

Ellie, my neighbor Carl and I drove two-plus hours to Rutherfordton and picked up four piglets Sunday: Ossabaw/Yorkshire and Ossabaw/Hampshire crosses for breeding stock.
